I don't know whether to be proud or embarrassed

My gym just wrapped up a summer fitness auction promotion. Basically, for the past month or so, you could rack up gym dollars by doing gym-related things, like going to the gym and group fitness classes, or by buying gym-related products, like personal training sessions, tanning, massages, memberships, etc. Being a practical marketing promotion, you got a lot more "money" from buying stuff than from working out.

The big auction is tomorrow night, so they released the money totals today. Guess who came in third place, just $4 behind second place? And without buying a single gym-related product?

Yup. Me! I have so much free time, thanks to lack of take home work and other extracurriculars to keep me busy, that I'm hitting up TurboKick, Ab Lab, Pilates, and Cardio Kickbox several times a week. It's kind of sad that I have nothing better to do, but my guns are near what they were at my DM-ing peak, and if I stretch and flex and kinda squint, I almost have abs!

I was gonna skip tomorrow's auction, but now I'm going because I feel like I stand a chance to win a prize. There's a casino night beforehand. Should I sit on my winnings in hopes of winning a small prize, or should I try to multiply/risk my winnings on the blackjack tables and go for the grand prize trip to Vegas?

  1. I thought I commented on this, but maybe I forgot to press post. But, you should definitely go big or go home, but I like to play it safe so...yeah, be totally proud of it.

  2. Screw that. Go for broke! Let it ride! You don't need tacky sweatbands or gym bags. You need a Vegas trip.

On a side note (for you and everyone else), having never had to pay for gym membership, what's a reasonable price? I feel like gyms in D.C. plan to get me in shape by ass raping me with fees until I have buns of steel.

Yea, try sleeping tonight with that mental image.

  3. I did a summer membership, which was $99 for mos. It's normally $40 a month, with 10% off if you pay upfront.

The gym that I'm going to after my summer membership is up cut me a deal - $49 sign on fee, $35 (I think?) a month after that, with 10% off for paying up front, which I did. It ended up working out to $33 a month.

Of course, joining the U of R gym would've been $220 a year, but I need my kickboxing classes!

And other items are gift certificates and Cirque du Soleil tickets, so I may play a bit but will mostly hoard my winnings, I think.

  5. I played a little blackjack, with a fun dealer who played freebie games, like the guess the dealer's total and everyone gets $10. Every time he reshuffled, he played the, guess this card and you get a big stack of money... and I guessed the card!

Other (jealous) people at the table told me that there was a $1000 in the big stack of money, so I started thinking about Vegas. Could I wait until Henry was old enough for Vegas? Could I give it to my parents?

But sadly, when I cashed out, it turns out my big stack of money was less than I was told, and I had only $663. I won a $25 gift certificate to a local restaurant, and the dude who's going to Vegas bought it with $1200+ dollars.

    Shoulda gone all in...

  6. So, if I put together an all drum major melee cage match, would you be down for that? I think you have pretty good odds...

  7. Alex: I would absolutely watch that. I would even pay money to watch that.

Rosa: Hmmm. You could take Dave, no problem. Ben might be problematic, but maybe all the time in the lab has softened him up? Doug is bigger than you, but maybe he's getting old (if we're dead then clearly 06 is ancient). Kate, meanwhile, is smaller than you but she's pretty scrappy--not sure where I would put my money for that one...

  8. Second Rita's comment. Actually, I would pay NOT to see Ben, Dave, or Doug in the mix...
